About

The FENDALTON BOWLINC CLUB Inc.

Incorporated under the Incorporated Societies Act, 1908
A non-profit Society dedicated to fostering the sport of Bowls.

In 2005 the Fendalton Bowling Club celebrated its 60th anniversary.

The Club nestles in the idyllic surrounds of Fendalton Park which is on the main thoroughfare from Christchurch International Airport to Christchurch City centre.

The Bowling Club was formed in 1942 when the Fendalton Company of the Home Guard disbanded. The Home Guardsmen had developed such an “esprit de corps” during the years that they wanted to keep in touch with one another. From this desire sprang the idea of forming the Fendalton Bowling Club.

There had been two previous attempts to form a club. Both had failed, but with the Home Guard as its core, the inaugural meeting on 19th June 1944 proved a success. Nineteen of the thirty-three men who attended were former members of the Home Guard.

Initially the club had one green, a second being developed in 1949. In 1954 the No.1 Green was the venue for the finals of the New Zealand Championships.

Recent amalgamation with the Fendalton Women’s Bowling Club in 2004 had brought in another green however this is now used by Bowls Canterbury who have based their operation in associated pavilion. This green has been kindly made available on special occasions. All three have received high praise and are rated as good as any in the country.

The Club pavilion is well appointed with separate dining hall and lounge facilities.

All three greens measure 36.6m x 36.6m and are cotula-maniatoto, a basic water weed which originated in the colder climate of the South Otago Coast.

The Club is preparing itself to co-host the World Bowls in 2008, having already host the World Champion of Champions Singles competitions in November 2006, and co-hosted the Asia Pacific Championships in 2007.
