From the President:
Presidents Report 2010/11
Presented at the Club AGM on 18th June 2011
The Club has enjoyed another successful season.
This has been due to the enthusiastic group of Club members who have carried out the various "off field" duties to ensure the Club runs well.
Colin James has kept the greens in tip top order and Linda Hadley with the Grounds Committee has kept the surrounding area neat and tidy.
My thanks to the Executive Committee, Diane Shepard for all the secretarial duties and Peter Cosgriff for taking care of our finances.
I would like to thank all the Club Convenors. John Pugh for looking after the Match Committee duties so competently, Penny Leighs catering, selectors Michael Kerr and Noleen Martin, and Phil Alexander our Convenor of tournaments. My thanks to Mark Holdsworth for his excellent work producing the Toucher.
Finally my grateful thanks to Robin Odams for the efficient way he has organized the bar.
I record with sadness the passing of the following members over the past year, Lyn Watson, Graeme Anderson, Margaret Shackel, Life Member June Gebbie, Doug Pansing, Joy Burtt, and John Lorimer.
We have had approximately 50 new members for this season and due to 35 being past players this has increased our playing strength.
As reported by the men's Selector convenor Michael Kerr, despite the September earthquake we made a good start to the season. We entered three teams in the "Three Fours" competition which required 42 available players.
Although we were only placed in the 4th, 11th and 12th divisions the results of 1st, 1st and 3rd will mean automatic promotion for two teams next season.
The mixed Tens Teams proved to be very strong and performed well. We were also represented in the mixed Junior Pairs.
After the Christmas break we entered three teams in the Tens competition plus a team in the Junior fours. We were also able to enter three teams (24 players) in the mixed Manning Cup. All these teams were settling in well when the earthquake of 22nd February destroyed all future interclub play.
We were able to play the annual Duster matches with Burnside, Morrison Avenue and Elmwood Clubs. At Burnside we fielded 44 players and although we lost, the increased numbers meant many members enjoyed the event. We were successful at Morrison Avenue with 40 players, but unfortunately lost the Elmwood fixture. Their men had a prior commitment and they were only able to field 28 players.
We also continued our involvement in the Edwards Cup for men and Bernie Bigg for women. Thank you to Les Bennetts and Judy Walker for organizing our Club in those competitions.
I would like to thank our dedicated coaches for all the time and effort they put in during the past season. I would especially like to thank Cal Templeton for coaching the Christchurch Boy's High School Year 13 Sports Studies class.
To quote from their letter of 8th February 2011.
"We have been incredibly fortunate and we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to use such superb facilities which the Fendalton Club provide. The longstanding partnership between the club and school is highly valued and we look forward to this continuing in the future."
In January we ran a successful corporate bowling evening attracting 26 teams of enthusiastic non bowlers which was a good fund raiser. A further evening set down for 22nd February was cancelled because of the earthquake.
The Club Championship events attracted good entries and congratulations go to the eventual winners. The men's Triples Champion team of Ray Hanna, Len Isitt and Donald Purser, and the women's Pairs Champion team of Nan Mann and Lois McCurdy both got through to the semi finals in the Champion of Champions. An excellent achievement.
During the season Noleen Martin and helpers have cooked dinner at the clubrooms on one Friday a month. This has earned the club in excess of$200. A further dinner is planned for the 24th June. This is a worthwhile initiative and has proved very popular.
We had a successful end of year dinner and prize giving, and thanks to Robin Odam's active sale of tickets, we ended up with a good turnout for the event.
Since the closing of the season we have planed the No 1 Green and I would like to thank all the members who helped with the big job of heaping up the large amount of soil. We are also grateful to the PD workers who removed all the soil off the green.
The green will be re-sown in July and Colin James is confident, that with reasonable weather conditions, we will be playing on the green around Show weekend in early November.
The Club continues to get good use during the winter months with Indoor Bowls and Bridge. We have also leased our premises to the Masonic Lodge and one week in late May to the Christchurch City Council Planning Committee which are good earners for the Club.
I look forward to you continuing to enjoy your bowls over the coming year.
Bill Todd, President
